In 2019, the board of the Diving Competence Centre came up with the idea for Austria's first underwater cot. In 2021, the winter attraction was to be brought to life for divers for the first time. The underwater nativity scene has been open to visitors at the Dixi - Pfahlbauhaus diving station in Weyregg am Attersee since 6 December 2021. A particular challenge in the realisation was the reinterpretation of the underwater nativity scene and the choice of material.
Once again this year, the "first underwater nativity scene on Lake Attersee" will be sunk on the 1st Sunday in Advent at the "Dixi" diving entry point in Weyregg!
The underwater nativity scene can be seen at the Dixi pile dwelling in Weyregg every year from the first Sunday in Advent until Candlemas on 2 February. The Dixi pile dwelling is located on the B152 - Seeleiten Bundesstraße KM 10.6.
The underwater nativity scene can be viewed from 01.12.2024 until 02.02.2025
"Our thanks go above all to Isabella Heigl for the fantastic artistic realisation." All the figures are depicted in the underwater world. Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus have been adapted to the element of water. The Christ Child is in a shell and Mary, the Mother of God, is wearing a coral necklace. As an analogy to the three wise men from the East, the three sharks from the oceans visit the Christ child. The symbol for the Christmas star is a golden starfish and the traditional sheep become "sea sheep", a type of sea snail that looks similar to sheep on land and therefore also bears this name.
Anyone who thinks that this reinterpretation is a trivialisation of the nativity scene is mistaken. On the contrary: it draws on old symbols from Christianity. Pearls as an indication of the preciousness of life, fish as an ancient symbol in Christianity or coral necklaces, which in Italy are regarded as an ancient symbol of protection to protect children from harm. "The students at HTL Vöcklabruck were incredibly creative when it came to choosing the right material for the realisation," Oberschmied emphasises. An anodised metal was used.
Austria's first official underwater cot was christened at the beginning of December 2021 thanks to the commitment of Gregor Bockmüller from the "Under Pressure" diving centre and a diving priest friend. The cot was launched into the water in autumn 2019 as a test and for photo material.
In 2021, the underwater winter attraction was brought to life for divers for the first time. "The underwater nativity scene was launched in time for the first Sunday in Advent at the Dixi - Pfahlbauhaus diving access point in Weyregg and can then be seen until Candlemas in February," says Oberschmied, adding: "I would like to thank everyone involved and hope that the new and unique attraction will be well received by divers!"
Austria's largest inland body of water, Lake Attersee, between Linz and Salzburg, directly on the A1 West motorway, is an Eldorado for divers from all over Europe. With an area of 48 km² and a length of 23 km, the Upper Austrian Attersee offers an extensive and unique diving area. The unusually clear water of drinking water quality allows visibility of up to 25 metres, in winter up to 30 metres. 23 diving entry points and diving centres are available to underwater sports enthusiasts all year round. The diving entrance "Dixi Pfahlbauhaus" is located on the B152 - Seeleiten federal road KM 10.6.
