Motor boating on the Attersee

Motor boating is permitted on the Attersee in the Salzkammergut. Basically, to drive a motor boat (electric or combustion engine) with a drive power of 4.4 kW (6 PS) or more, you need a certificate of competence (boatmaster's license, motor boat license). For motorboats under 4.4 kW, the completion of the age of 16 is sufficient. For motorboats with an electric drive of less than 500 watts, the age of 12 is sufficient.

Laws and rules for motor boating at Attersee

In order to keep this possibility of motor boating on Lake Attersee for a long time to come, we would like to ask you to strictly follow the following laws and rules:

Motor boat lock

Motor boating (motor vehicles with engine drive) on the Attersee is prohibited from 01 July to 31 August each year.

No night driving

The operation of vehicles powered by an internal combustion engine is prohibited all year round from 9 PM to 7 AM (NO NIGHT Driving).

OÖ lake traffic regulations & shipping law

The entire provisions of the OÖ. Seen-Verkehrsordnung as well as the shipping law can be read at www.ris.bka.gv.at!

Protection zones

are those parts of the lake which are marked by the navigation signs "Prohibited passage" or "Closed water area" and are located in particular near public bathing facilities. The width of this zone from the shore line towards the lake is 100 m (a smaller width can be determined by additional signs).

Shipping in protection zones

The practice of navigation is prohibited in protection zones during the period from 1 May to 30 September each year.

Littoral zone

Motor vehicles may not be driven closer than 200 m to the shore or a reed belt in front of it, except when approaching, leaving or stopping. With the exception of priority vehicles, motor vehicles must take the shortest route when leaving the shore zone and may not travel faster than 10 km/h.

Approval

All motorboats with an internal combustion engine must be approved by the authority = Amt der OÖ. Landesregierung, Department of Traffic, Bahnhofplatz 1, 4021 Linz, Tel.: +43 732 772013654. With the approval the license plate is also assigned.

FOREIGN LICENCE AND CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCE

Sports vehicles with foreign registration (or registration certificate) may be driven in Austria and do not require Austrian registration. For recreational craft subject to the Recreational Craft Directive, without CE marking, this exception applies for no more than 3 months in a calendar year.

Foreign drivers of sports vehicles

do not need an Austrian boatmaster's licence if they have a corresponding foreign certificate of competency (or certificate for recreational craft). The provisions of the Navigation Act must be observed!
