The Frankenmarkt baroque crib does not correspond to the conventional form of our Christmas cribs. It is much more completely baroque crib, a magnificent installation, which tries to put the Christmas events in a rich residential town. Visits are possible by appointment
(parish office tel. 07684/6296).
It is assumed that the citizens of Frankenmarkt ordered this nativity scene from the famous sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler in Mondsee after the plague years of 1713/14 had passed.
After his death in 1723, his successor in the workshop, Franz Anton Koch, probably made the magnificent group. The splendidly dressed, 45 cm high mannequins with eight wooden ball joints each, whose proportions were also adopted by later figure makers, date from this early period.
The figures are dressed in precious robes. According to baroque conception, Mary and Joseph - both of royal blood - have put on "Spanish court costume" for the occasion of the visit of the Three Kings.
From Christmas Day to January 6, open after each service from about 10:35 am.
Other visits are possible by appointment by telephone.
