Unterach am Attersee, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Hike Time Travel Unterach

Explore the diverse past of Unterach
Visit a traditional local business

If you have only known Unterach as an idyllic bathing spot and culinary paradise, you will have to change your mind now, because Unterach is the "European Cultural Capital 2023" and is home to a multitude of cultural sites that you can experience on a walk, starting with the picturesque ensemble "Church, former schoolhouse", famous for the Klimt painting. We look at Saint Bartholomew, who was not only roasted, but also had to watch as the married  librettist Viktor Leon assaulted the lovely Risa in front of his eyes in 1897.
It is also little known that Unterach  was the home of the lovers Eduard Boulenger and Philipp v. Ferrari, the love couple. Ferrari, the richest man in Europe, were given a triumphant reception in 1892, with the parish priest and mayor present, at a time when Franz Josef's homosexual brother, Ludwig Viktor, had disappeared into obscurity in Salzburg. You can find out more about the background to this incident on our cultural hike. The most famous work written within Unterach's walls is Hugo Wolf's "Feuerreiter" and - irony of fate - set in the foggy, hard-to-heat giant villa, which the then owner Friedrich Eckstein graciously left to Hugo, who was seeking peace and quiet. Wolf  knew Brahms was a guest at the nearby Berghof, both  enemies because of Wagner. And between Berghof and Eckstein Villa  the Katzenlotte house, where for generations child-rich  small farmers, fishmongers and leatherworkers fought for survival!
This juxtaposition of rich people, artists, intellectuals, brooding people, "weirdos" and locals inspired Thomas Bernhard to write his wonderful novella "Die Mütze", which is set in Unterach and accompanies us on our hike.
But the pre-tourist era has also left behind interesting traces that are easily overlooked; how did, for example, the Salzburg coat of arms come to be here? For example, how did the coat of arms of the Salzburg Alt family, from which the famous Salome Alt came, come to have the honour of adorning the Unterach coat of arms?

Together with a nature and landscape guide, I, Annegret Ritzinger, also offer cycling excursions or hikes with a special focus on nature.
Explore the Attersee with me from all sides, hikes, boat trips with a swim stop at historically interesting places.
