Osteoporosis is an old diagnostic term and is linked solely to bone quality. In recent years, it has been recognised that it is more important to avoid fractures and not to take numerical values of a finding, as it is the fracture that causes pain!
The risk of fracture can have extremely diverse causes such as age, gender, family history of fractures, increased risk of falls, diet, etc.. The treatment options are just as varied and range from strength and balance training to nutritional advice and medication counselling.
It is important to recognise the increased risk of bone fractures at an early stage in order to be able to counteract them in good time.
