Gustav Mahler Composer's Cottage

Steinbach am Attersee, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • All weather

The world famous Austrian composer Gustav Mahler spent part of his summer vacation composing at a 19th century guesthouse on the shores of lake Attersee.

From 1893 to 1896 Gustav Mahler resided at a guesthouse named Föttinger in Seefeld/Steinbach, composing parts of his Second and Third Symphony. In order to provide him with a quiet place for composing, a small cottage was built to which he could retreat. This little hut was renovated in 1983 to reflect its original looks.

As of 1893, Gustav Mahler retreated to this hide-out and enjoyed the untouched nature around him, absorbing its sounds with his hyper-sensitive musician’s ears - the wind rustling through the trees at the shore, the rolling waves of the lake and the purling of the lake water between the stones.

Get inspired now and try the 360° perspective tour!

The guesthouse Föttinger can still be found on the shores of the lake. Today, visitors come here for recreation, just like Gustav Mahler more than a hundred years ago in search of tranquility and inspiration. At that time though, the shores of Lake Attersee were quieter than they are today!

Open all year.
At the moment the composing house can be visited at any time in daylight without prior registration; no key is required.
