Hiking tips for a safe day in the mountains

The hiking options in the Attersee-Attergau holiday region are just as varied as the landscape itself: From gentle hikes in the north to gently ascending pleasure hikes to real summits in the Höllengebirge and the Schafberg in the south.

If you want to explore the mountains in the region on your own, it is important that you are well prepared for your mountain tour and know what to do if the worst comes to the worst. We have put together some valuable hiking tips for a safe day in the mountains:

PREPARATION

Inform yourself well about the planned tour before the hike: How difficult is it? How long will the ascent and descent take? Is there a refuge on the route?

WEATHER

Read the current weather forecast and keep a close eye on the weather. Small, localised thunderstorms are not uncommon in the mountains. If in doubt, postpone your tour.

INFORM ACQUAINTANCES

Before you set off, let your holiday accommodation know where you are going and when you will be back. Also inform friends and family about your tour. This way, help can be provided quickly in an emergency.

SUFFICIENT FLUIDS

Make sure you take enough liquid with you for your hike. This will ensure you are well hydrated if the huts are closed.

ACTING IN AN EMERGENCY

In the event of an accident in the mountains, it is important to keep a cool head and act quickly:

  • Callthe emergency number on your mobile phone: 140 (Alpine emergency number) or 112 (European emergency number)
  • Report an emergency: Who is reporting? Where did the accident happen? What exactly has happened?
  • Bring to safety: Remove the injured person and yourself from the danger area (falling rocks) and provide first aid. Always follow the instructions of the rescue organisation
