Concert as part of the 10th Gustav Mahler Festival in Steinbach am Attersee:
"Trivial Mahler?"
During his lifetime, Mahler was repeatedly accused of adopting trivial musical gestures in his symphonic works. Marches, operettas, fairground music, military calls, waltzes and ländler are all conspicuously frequent. Today they are a trademark of his style, but back then they irritated a society that was unfamiliar with Mahler's broad integration of different musical genres as an expression of the diversity of life. What did these original genres sound like? How did Mahler adapt them and how do we interpret them today?
The Viennese theater musicians, who have been shaped by their many years of collaboration with Michael Heltau and are known for their musical approach to music of all genres, will address these questions with visual and audible pleasure under the direction and in the arrangements of Tscho Theissing.
