In June 2011, three of the roughly 20-30 sunken pile dwelling stations in Lake Attersee which date back to neolithic times were declared UNESCO World Heritage.
A total of 111 of the roughly 1000 known settlements in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Slovenia, and Italy are under UNESCO protection.
Apart from the three locations on Lake Attersee (Litzlberg Süd, Abtsdorf 1 and 3), the settlement 'See' on Lake Mondsee and an island in the Lake Keutschacher See in Carinthia also bear this desirable title.
