People have been living in pile dwellings on the shores of the lake since the Neolithic Age. The prehistoric village ruins on the shores of Lake Attersee have been remarkably well preserved. Anchoring in these areas destroys the pile dwellings, which are over 6,000 years old. Anchors of any size dig into the ground and the anchor chain scrapes the surface of the lake bed. Damage caused by anchoring is clearly evident in the annual inspections of the sites.
