Two Instruments I One Language
Music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Matthias Bartolomey
Matthias Bartolomey, violoncello and moderation
An evening under the sign of duality: Matthias Bartolomey plays alternately on two violoncellos.
The first instrument is the famous "Lion's Head Cello" by David Tecchler, built in Rome in 1727 - it represents the music of Bach. The second violoncello is its detailed copy, built by Philip Bonhoeffer, cardiologist and instrument maker, in 2021, representing the music of Bartolomey.
A lion in dialogue with itself: Selected movements from the famous six suites for violoncello solo by J.S. Bach, as well as new, groove- and rock-emphasised original compositions by Matthias Bartolomey, form the centrepiece.
A musical dialogue spanning 300 years, interrupted by the exciting history of the construction and design of both instruments.
