Schubert's great Mass in E flat major in Gmunden and St. Georgen

The Singfoniker's next major concert project in f is dedicated to Franz Schubert: his Mass in E flat major, D950, one of his two great Latin masses, was composed in the last year of Schubert's life. He composed it not only for use at court, but also for performance in parish churches by the church choir.

It is Schubert's longest and largest mass, also in terms of the instrumentation. The usual four vocal soloists are joined by a second tenor, and Schubert also calls for two oboes, clarinets and bassoons as well as two horns, two trumpets, three trombones and timpani in addition to the usual strings.

The public enjoyed the mass immensely and it was repeated several times, but was soon forgotten. It is thanks to Johannes Brahms that the work was published in Leipzig in 1865.

Under the overall musical direction of Karl Lohninger, the work will be performed on Saturday, 27 April 2024 at 19:00 in the Capuchin Church in Gmunden and on Sunday, 28 April 2024 at 19:30 in the parish church of St. Georgen im Attergau.

The use of original instruments by the tried and tested Gmunden ensemble "Musica gratia" promises authentic listening pleasure. The solo voices will be sung by Martina Neubauer, soprano, Johanna Krokovay, alto, Johannes Bamberger, tenor: Jakob Pilgram, tenor, and Matthias Helm, bass.
