Please note that ENTERING THE CAVE IS PROHIBITED!!! The **Hochlecken large** cave is **the longest known large cave in the Höllengebierge** with a length of about 5.5 km (as of 2005). Local mountaineers have discovered the cave already in 1920. **LOCATION** The cave is located in the cadastral municipality of Neukirchen in the market town of Altmünster in the district of Gmunden in Upper Austria, on the border with Steinbach am Attersee. In the northeast flank of the Hochleckenkogel at 1520 m above sea level or to the right of the Scheckenbergsteig below the summit of Hochlecken is the cave, which can be visited from the outside. ENTERING THE CAVE IS FORBIDDEN! **CAVING** First explorations by local mountaineers took place from 1920 onwards. Systematic exploration and surveying of the old part began from 1963 to 1964. In 1972 a new part was discovered very close to the entrance and in 1975 the Stierwascher shaft was explored for the first time. The deepest point of the shaft was reached for the first time on February 23rd, 1979 by a French group. **MONUMENT PROTECTION** Already since 1969 the still unknown cave at Hochlecken is under monument protection. ENTERING THE CAVE IS PROHIBITED! - Can only be viewed from outside [ Arrival ](#ttgCollapseAnreise) ---------------------------------- **Accessibility / arrival****Arrival by car** ---> from the Weißenbachtal continue in the direction of Steinbach am Attersee and there via the Großalmlandesstraße to the Taferlklaussee or to the parking lot at the Kienklause inn, where the ascent to the Hochlecken is located. Or coming from Schörfling/Weyregg continue on the main road to Steinbach am Attersee and there turn left onto the Großalmlandesstraße and continue to the parking lot at the Kienklause Inn. **Arrival by train** ---> by train from Attnang-Puchheim to Kammer/Schörfling am Attersee and here with bus line 561 to Steinbach am Attersee. Return with bus line 562 to the train station Kammer/Schörfling am Attersee.
