Diving at Lake Attersee

With an area of 48 km² and a length of 23 km, Lake Attersee is a very popular destination for all diving enthusiasts in Austria and beyond.

Austria's largest inland body of water has drinking water quality and the unusually clear water allows visibility of up to 25 metres. The variety of diving zones and interesting dive sites make Lake Attersee an entertaining sports area for beginners, experienced divers and children alike: dive into the primeval "Wandl", experience the impressive steep wall at the "Kohlbauernaufsatz" or be enchanted by the "Unterwasserwald Kammer"!

The member companies of the Attersee Diving Competence Centre (numerous diving schools and filling stations around the lake) will provide you with the best care and expert advice. It's worth diving into the world of Lake Attersee!

Diving - 365 days a year

In the Attersee-Attergau holiday region in the beautiful Salzkammergut, diving is possible all year round: whether diving or scuba diving in fresh water, mixed gas diving, rebreather diving, winter diving or apnoea diving. Austria's largest inland lake offers unique diving experiences in fresh water, especially from September to June!

"The fact that the mountains only extend on the Steinbach side results in phenomenal light conditions without the use of artificial light!"

says Günther Oberschmied, chairman of the Attersee Diving Competence Centre.

River diving

Pure fun, adventure and nature: there is something exotic about diving in a river. The Ager and especially the Traun are ideal for river diving. River diving is not cold because the warm surface water from the lakes upstream flows down the Ager and Traun.

Small bullheads, aiteln, perch, tench, carp, trout, grayling, crayfish - everything lives in the Traun, even huchen can be seen from time to time. Many peaceful fish, but also huge pike, hide in the giant trees wedged in the river.

This abundance of fish combined with crystal-clear water, caves and tunnels, medieval weir structures and pump houses make diving and scuba diving in the Traun (at the Traun Falls) an unforgettable natural experience.

Scuben

Scuben = river snorkelling. It is a real alternative to diving to explore fish-rich but shallow flowing waters. This unique nature experience is equally suitable for divers and non-divers.

Before the actual scuba diving tour, non-divers are equipped with a mask, snorkel, fins, booties, gloves and a warm wetsuit and familiarised with the basics of snorkelling. And then nothing stands in the way of your scuba diving adventure with a local guide.

You float on the surface and the current of the Traun determines your pace. Sometimes you glide quickly over safe rapids to narrow, deep canyons, sometimes more slowly over wide pools full of fish

Apnoea diving

Apnoea means "without breath" or also respiratory arrest. Apnoea diving, also known as free diving, is the most original form of diving. Through mental preparation, relaxation and breathing techniques, you learn to control your pulse so that you can hold your breath for several minutes without stress. This not only makes freediving more relaxed, but also gives you a relaxed feeling when scuba diving.

The diving schools on Lake Attersee have years of experience: the infrastructure specially set up for freedivers, such as an apnoea platform, deep-diving sledges and descent ropes with lanyard safety, enable every freediver to train and improve their skills under ideal conditions for the first time.

Winter diving

Experience perfect visibility of up to 30 metres and absolute silence - diving in winter may seem exotic to many, but it is becoming increasingly popular. Ice-cold water and still not freezing. With the right equipment suitable for cold water and a dry suit, everyone can enjoy the special features of winter diving. Dry suit diving is demanding, offers a completely new kind of buoyancy control experience and the correct way to use it should be learnt in a special course.

Underwater cot

For the first time on Lake Attersee, the "first underwater cot" was sunk and christened at the "Dixi diving entry point"!

In 2019, the board of the Diving Competence Centre came up with the idea for Europe's first underwater nativity scene. The underwater nativity scene can be visited from the beginning of December in Weyregg am Attersee at the Dixi - Pfahlbauhaus diving centre.

Angelika Neuhofer - Underwater photographer

Steep rock faces, mystical rock formations and plants waving back and forth: When Angelika Neuhofer thinks of 'her Attersee', she doesn't think of glittering blue pictures with green hills and white swans. It's more likely to be perch, pike and whitefish. As an underwater photographer, she regularly dives in and shows us the beauty of a hidden world that for most of us seems so close and yet so far away.
